how to MAKE an imaginary friend
Everybody wants an imaginary friend. Why? LOTS of reasons. They are the perfect companion, they don’t say things that annoy, they are always understanding and faithful. They love you unconditionally, if only because they rely on you to sustain their existence. They are exercise for you imagination, which is the most important muscle in the human body. It also gives you a rush to play god and create your own being. And if for no other reason, it is a great ice breaker “have you met my imaginary friend?”
A lot of people try to make imaginary friends but fail miserably. Their friend is boring, or needy, or they just cant be bothered sustaining their life. Many friends only live for one afternoon because of their creator dose not understand the SPECIAL TIPS I am about to reveal. I will instruct you on the 3 important steps to creating a kick-ass Imaginary friend.
Its important to write out a description of your friend. Consider things like, Eye colour, favorite food, family history. I will include a List of possible questions at the END. Example: When creating a friend of my own I just assumed she would have two arms and two legs until I came to the question of how many limbs they actually had. Unless you force yourself to confront these issues you will just fall back onto “normal” which is “evil”.
Plus writing it out makes them more real and concrete, which is what you are aiming for. Your imaginary friend is made up of the same stuff that dreams are made of. This means they are fluid, and they can do stuff that dosent make sense. SO the facts you write down will change and this is OK. I have a friend who has several different names. As I talk to her I keep calling her by different names. When I first created her, Olivia Mandella, her hair was brown, but now it is purple. Don’t fight this, your friend is evolving and changing. Just move with it.
Its hard for some people to visualise a person out of nothing. Our imaginations need a diving board. That is what a picture is. A lot of people like to insult themselves and say that they are horrible drawers. I don’t quiet understand why. But your drawing ability is really irrelevant to the process. Just draw a body, and colour it in. It just makes it easier for your mind to imagine it. Sometimes when I create storys I will just draw blobs with one defining feature, like blue eyes or curly hair, just to make it easier for my mind to remember what my characters look like.
3. walk them out.
I do all my best imagining when I am walking. This is how my creative juices begin to flow and I enter “the zone”. Because walking is such a basic thing you don’t need to think about anything, but your scenery is stimulating and moving and you just let your eyes take control of themselves and roam the world. Walking with your friend is good for two reasons. 1, because you are moving, It forces you to visualize your friend moving and doing stuff. If you where just sitting down with them, you would have to consiously force them to do things, but when walking they just naturally walk with you. And 2. you are constantly bombarded with stimulus for conversation, which is a great way to get to know your friend. “Do you like that tree?”, “would you like to climb it?” and then suddenly they are telling you about how they lived in a tree house for a year and talked to squirrels.![]()
Lastly, I’ve written a List of Questions you can consider when creating your friend. They will REALLY help and are a MUST when creating your very own imaginary friend.

I am stunned, because once, you came over to my house, and I think you drew some of your imaginary friends on some paper. I still have it.
PS - YAH! I GOT IT TO WORK! YAY ME!
yah! you can comment me now. I dont remember drawing my friends for you!?! see if you can find them for me! haha.
haha. well I don’t know whether they really are or not but I suspect so! I will hunt through my box of stuff and see if I can find it :]
i never had any imaginary friends as a kid, i was too busy playing with bugs and lizards and things. i used to catch these massive hairy spiders, put them in juice bottles and take them to school for show and tell.
I’m thinking that maybe I need one?
I couldn’t bear to have a non-human friend, it just isn’t natural to me. I was thinking a tree sprite, so I guess that isn’t actually human either, but they definitely aren’t alien or animal, so close enough.
It it was a boy I think I would end up getting my heart broken with another case of unrequited love, so I shall have to find a girl tree sprite to befriend.
I think she would be good for my mind.
This would’ve been really helpful for me a few years ago.
I had an imaginary dog. It died because I forgot to feed him
